Affy and Aliya <\/em>are two Muslim women employed by Lloyds Bank (LBP), one of the UK\u2019s biggest banks. In May 2021, both posted statements in support of Palestine<\/strong> on the bank\u2019s internal intranet portal. Both denounced the ongoing human rights violations<\/strong> committed by the Israeli government. Affy also expressed her desire for the company to boycott HP,<\/strong> which is complicit<\/a> in the oppression of Palestinians. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, Affy and Aliya were investigated and subsequently sanctioned for alleged \u2018gross misconduct\u2019 and breaching Lloyds\u2019 policies regarding discrimination, harassment and abusive and offensive content, among other things.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This has had damning consequences <\/strong>in <\/strong>Affy and <\/strong>Aliya<\/strong>\u2019s <\/strong>personal and professional lives<\/strong>. Affy, who was 21 at the time, lost a prestigious graduate role with a \u00a360,000 starting salary as a result of Lloyds\u2019 sanctions, and they both lost their annual bonuses. Having to defend themselves against Lloyds\u2019 blatantly discriminatory attempt to restrict their fundamental freedoms has taken a massive toll on their mental and physical well-being. Both are anxious about their future careers and now fear reprisal for raising concerns about socially responsible business or speaking about Palestine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lloyds is proving itself to be unwilling to adhere to its self-proclaimed commitment to universal human rights<\/strong>, choosing instead to silence two Muslim employees echoing international law\u2019s call for justice in Palestine. Lloyds\u2019 approach to <\/em>Affy and Aliya\u2019s expressions of solidarity with Palestine is yet another manifestation of double-standards <\/strong>when it comes to advocating for Palestine, at which point the veil of progressiveness often vanishes. Expressing solidarity and advocating for human rights should have no exception, whether it is extended to Ukraine, Black Lives Matter or Palestine.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our aims are straightforward. We want Affy and Aliya\u2019s sanctions revoked immediately and their professional reputations restored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We need urgent financial support to bring this discrimination case to court. The minimum costs to cover the lawyers\u2019 fees as well as the court fees are estimated to amount to \u00a330,000 \/ \u20ac35,<\/strong>000.<\/strong> This is why we have launched a crowdfunding campaign.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
