On 30th<\/sup> September, the European Legal Support Center (ELSC) has warned the Rheinisch-Westf\u00e4lische Technische Hochschule Aachen (RWTH) in an open letter to comply with its obligations to prohibit genocide and apartheid and cut its cooperation agreements with the Israeli Technion University, which is directly involved in crimes against humanity in Palestine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technion is known for its historically close ties with the Israeli military industries. It conducts research and development in fields such as robotics, drones, and cybersecurity, which are then deployed by the Israeli military. Moreover, many of the technological innovations emerging from Technion are “dual-use,” meaning they have both civilian and military applications, and they are also integrated into military strategies and equipment of the army. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The RWTH Aachen University and the Technion are connected on multiple levels. They have a partnership agreement that provides an exchange platform for study and research visits for Bachelor, Master as well as Doctoral students in many areas that can be defined as \u201cdual-use\u201d, such as:  Energy Materials and Energy Conversion, Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, Image Processing as well as Biological- and Chemical Engineering. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At no time did the RWTH Aachen University take a position on the genocide perpetrated by Israel in Gaza. Instead, it publicly expressed its solidarity with Israel after the 7th<\/sup> October, despite Israel\u2019s clear violations of international law. This stands in clear contrast to the university’s handling of Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine. In 2022, the University suspended all academic and scientific cooperation with the Russian Federation.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the face of such blatant complicity, students at the university, organised as Students for Palestine Aachen<\/a>, set up a protest camp against genocide on campus in May 2024, demanding an end to the cooperation with the Israeli Technion University. Since then, they have organised numerous well-attended events such as lectures, workshops and demonstrations. Dozens of activists stay at the camp every night. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their demonstrations have been subjected to repeated physical attacks and vandalism by Zionists, as well as authoritarian repression by the university and the German police. In May 2024, two masked assailants attacked the camp<\/a>, pouring white and blue paint right next to the tents of the sleeping students. In another incident, the University took thermal images of the students’ tents during their sleep to monitor the students’ activities, violating direct instructions by the Police not to do so. These thermal images were published during a court proceeding, in which the RWTH had unsuccessfully attempted to close the camp and deny the students of their constitutional right to assemble freely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently, police authorities have threatened to clear the camp after the university had repeatedly threatened to revoke the students’ right to hold a protest camp. The case is now pending and awaits judgement from the Higher Administrative Court in M\u00fcnster. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Am 30.<\/sup> September forderte das European Legal Support Center (ELSC) die Rheinisch-Westf\u00e4lische Technische Hochschule Aachen (RWTH) in einem offenen Brief auf, ihren Verpflichtungen zum Unterbinden von V\u00f6lkermord und Apartheid nachzukommen und ihre Kooperationsvereinbarungen mit der israelischen Technion-Universit\u00e4t aufzuheben, da diese direkt an Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit in Pal\u00e4stina beteiligt ist.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seit jeher ist die Technion f\u00fcr ihre engen Verbindungen zur israelischen Milit\u00e4rindustrie bekannt. Sie betreibt Forschung und Entwicklung in Bereichen wie Robotik, Drohnen und Cybersicherheit, welche wiederum vom israelischen Milit\u00e4r eingesetzt werden. Dar\u00fcber hinaus sind viele der technologischen Innovationen, die aus der Technion hervorgehen, \u201edual-use\u201c, d. h., sie k\u00f6nnen sowohl zivil als auch milit\u00e4risch eingesetzt werden und sind auch in milit\u00e4rische Strategien und Ausr\u00fcstung der Armee integriert.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die RWTH Aachen und die Technion sind auf vielf\u00e4ltige Weise miteinander verbunden. Sie haben ein Partnerschaftsabkommen, das eine Austauschplattform f\u00fcr Studien- und Forschungsaufenthalte f\u00fcr Bachelor- und Masterstudierende sowie f\u00fcr Doktorand:innen in vielen Bereichen bietet, die einen potenziellen ”dual-use” haben. So etwa: Energiematerialien und Energieumwandlung, K\u00fcnstliche Intelligenz, Data Analytics, Bildverarbeitung sowie Bio- und Chemieingenieurwesen.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die RWTH Aachen hat sich zu keinem Zeitpunkt zum V\u00f6lkermord Israels in Gaza positioniert. Stattdessen hat sie sich nach dem 7. Oktober lediglich mit Israel solidarisiert, obwohl Israel eindeutig gegen das V\u00f6lkerrecht verst\u00f6\u00dft. Im Umgang mit Russlands Einmarsch in die Ukraine hat sich die RWTH Aachen deutlich kritischer positioniert. Im Jahr 2022 setzte die Universit\u00e4t jegliche akademische und wissenschaftliche Zusammenarbeit mit der Russischen F\u00f6deration aus.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angesichts der mitt\u00e4terschaftlichen Beihilfe organisierten sich Studierende der Universit\u00e4t als \u201eStudents for Palestine Aachen<\/a>“. Seit Mai 2024 haben sie auf dem Campus ein Protestcamp gegen V\u00f6lkermord errichtet, um ein Ende der Zusammenarbeit mit der Technion zu fordern. Inzwischen haben sie zahlreiche gut besuchte Veranstaltungen wie Vortr\u00e4ge, Workshops und Demonstrationen organisiert. Dutzende Aktivist*Innen \u00fcbernachten jede Nacht im Camp.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ihre Demonstrationen waren Grund genug f\u00fcr wiederholte Angriffe durch zionistisch-motovierten Vandalismus sowie f\u00fcr autorit\u00e4re Repression durch die Universit\u00e4t und die Polizei. Im Mai 2024 griffen zwei maskierte Angreifer<\/a> das Camp an und gossen wei\u00dfe und blaue Farbe direkt neben den Zelten der schlafenden Studierenden. In einem anderen Fall<\/a> nahm die Universit\u00e4tsleitung W\u00e4rmebildaufnahmen der Zelte der Studierenden w\u00e4hrend ihres Schlafs auf, um ihre Aktivit\u00e4ten zu \u00fcberwachen; trotz direkter Anweisung der Polizei dies zu unterlassen. Diese Aufnahmen wurden w\u00e4hrend eines Gerichtsverfahrens ver\u00f6ffentlicht, in dem die RWTH vergeblich versuchte das Camp zu schlie\u00dfen und den Studierenden ihr Grundrecht auf Versammlungsfreiheit zu verwehren. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vor kurzem drohte die Polizei damit, das Camp zu r\u00e4umen, nachdem die Universit\u00e4t wiederholt drohte, den Studierenden das Recht auf ein Protestcamp zu entziehen. Der Fall ist nun anh\u00e4ngig und wartet auf das Urteil des Oberverwaltungsgerichts M\u00fcnster.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
